Austin Kayser, M.D.

Dr. Kayser received a B.S. in Psychology and Biology with an emphasis in Neuroscience from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He earned his medical degree from the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health and completed his psychiatry residency at the Medical College of Wisconsin.

Dr. Kayser was drawn to psychiatry by people’s stories: where a person has been, what they are facing, and where they hope to go. That interest shapes how he practices. He listens first, and he takes seriously what patients already know about themselves. In his view, the physician is the expert in diagnosis and medications, while the patient is the expert in their own life and body. Treatment works best when those two kinds of expertise are combined in a collaborative plan built around the patient’s own goals and values, and aimed at what the patient defines as success.

Dr. Kayser provides evidence-based medication management for late adolescents and adults (ages 16 and up). His visits draw on supportive, psychodynamic, cognitive behavioral, and dialectical behavior therapy principles, with attention to the whole person rather than a diagnosis alone. He uses medications when appropriate while considering the full range of interventions that may help a patient move forward, and he believes part of his job is helping to build lasting resilience.
